Saturdays format was prologue first to
decide the start order for the afternoons first full lap of
the track. The prologue track was a 15km shortened version
of the long track containing all the same components. For
one of the two Chapman cars prologue would be his first and
last drive of the weekend. Robert Chapman and Ross
Challacombe in their Pajero only made it 8km into the track
when the Pajero lost oil pressure and the motor seized,
putting an early end to his weekend of racing. Clayton
Chapman and navi Adam McGuire on the other hand had a very
successful run taking the class lead by 8 seconds over
production class champion Geoff Pickering in his Pajero.
After section 1 Clayton had a comfortable 6 min lead over
Geoff Pickering.
Sunday consisted of three laps of the track
with a 30min service break between laps. First lap ran
smoothly for Clayton still holding the lead now by 9 min.
With the sandy straights of the track now being churned up
by the leading pro buggies, fuel consumption was increased
more than the team had anticipated. Clayton finished the 2nd
lap with the Triton running on the very few drops of fuel
left. For the third and final lap the crew had to borrow
fuel from the retired Offroad Rush team of Chris Western.
With a comfortable
lead all the boys had to do was bring it home in one piece.
At the 80km point of the track the main throttle spring
broke, leaving the Tritons throttle stuck 75% open, which
made the final leg to the finish a little more interesting.
Once the racing was done and dusted the
final result was in, Clayton and Adam placed first in class
and finished 13th outright of a field 50 competitors. It is
now, back to the shed and a few more late nights to get
Roberts Pajero up and running again before the Toogoolawah
Qld short course which is to be held in two weeks.
